Cuando pensamos en la capital inglesa rápidamente nos imaginamos la Torre de Isabel o, como todos lo conocen mundialmente, el Big Ben, El Ojo de Londres – London Eye, los grandes buses rojos y la realeza. Londres es una ciudad encantadora y, sin duda alguna, con miles de cosas que conocer. Viví allí una larga temporada y dejé una lista enorme de cosas por visitar aún sin terminar. Pero cuando uno va en plan de turistear, siempre busca conocer los sitios más importantes y en ocasiones es poco el tiempo que tenemos. Por eso decidí comenzar mi blog compartiendo con ustedes una guía fácil y rápida para visitar Londres en un día.
Primero que todo les cuento que el sistema de transporte de Londres es uno de los mejores que conozco, moverse en esta gran ciudad, aunque parezca difícil, es sencillamente genial. Por eso mi primera recomendación es que compren un Travelcard para todo un día de zonas 1-2, allí están la mayoría de sitios turísticos. Eso sí, asegúrense de saber en que zona se encontrarán ustedes hospedados para que la incluyan, en caso de que no sea ninguna de estas. Aquí pueden chequear precios, zonas y darle un vistazo al mapa del Underground -metro- para que desde ya se familiaricen. Además comparto con ustedes este pequeño mapa donde encuentran las principales atracciones junto con las rutas para llegar más fácilmente. Por cierto, si llegan al aeropuerto de Heathrow, pueden tomar la línea Piccadilly que los lleva hasta el centro de la ciudad. Es la forma más económica y les tomará unos 50 minutos.
Luego de esta pequeña introducción para moverse en Londres ahora sí comenzamos con el paseo, que debo confesarles me enseñó mi cuñado y que cada vez que regreso a la ciudad lo repito.
Para empezar tomen el metro hacia la estación de Green Park, allí llegan las lineas de Piccadilly y Victoria, una vez que arriben saldrán justo al lado del muy famoso hotel Ritz, la película Notting Hill con Julia Roberts y Hugh Grant fue grabada en espacios del hotel, así que pueden aprovechar y tomarse su respectiva foto. Les recomiendo que intenten estar en Green Park a eso de las 10 a.m., tomen su foto en el Ritz y crucen el parque que da hacia el Palacio de Buckingham – Buckingham Palace.
Los parques son un atractivo natural de esta gran ciudad, así que aprovechen de disfrutar y caminar despacio, cruzar el parque no les tomará más de 10 minutos, todo dependerá de su ritmo. Cuando lleguen al final, se encontrarán con el Palacio de Buckingham, grandes portones negros y una gran multitud serán de ayuda para que no se pierdan.
Les recomiendo que estén alrededor de las 10 de la mañana en Green Park pues a las 11:30 a.m. se realiza en el Palacio de Buckingham el Cambio de Guardia, una de las mayores atracciones turísticas en la ciudad, así que no deben perderlo. Aprovechen estar temprano y consigan un buen puesto.
Normalmente en la época de invierno hay algunos cambios en el horario de este evento, así que si viajan en los meses de frío, antes de iniciar el recorrido den un vistazo al calendario. Aquí pueden chequear horas y posibles cancelaciones.
Cuando termine el Cambio de Guardia, tomen la gran vía roja que está frente al palacio, pueden caminar por la calle o por St. James Park, hermoso parque con grandes espacios verdes, lagunas y algunos patos a los cuales pueden alimentar. Caminen siempre recto hacia el Arco del Almirantazgo – Admiralty Arch, un gran arco que al pasarlo les dará la bienvenida a la Plaza de Trafalgar – Trafalgar Square, sabrán reconocer la plaza gracias a sus grandes leones y el gran obelisco que tiene en el medio. Allí también se encuentra la Galería Nacional de Londres, si es de su gusto pueden darle un vistazo, la entrada es totalmente gratuita.
Luego tomen la vía de la calle Whitehall hacia el Big Ben, no tengan miedo, no se perderán. Desde la galería en Trafalgar miren hacia el frente y verán al fondo el Big Ben y el London Eye, así que vayan hacia ellos siempre derecho. En el camino se encontrarán con el House Guards Parade, podrán tomarse fotos con los guardias y sus hermosos caballos.
Caminen hacia el final de la calle y se encontrarán toda el área de Westminster, el Big Ben, el Parlamento y el Palacio de Westminster. Allí se maravillarán con la hermosa Torre del Reloj, finalmente habrán llegado a uno de los mayores puntos turísticos de la ciudad. Al llegar al Big Ben se encontrarán con el Puente de Westminster – Westminster Bridge- y al cruzar todo el puente, justo al terminarlo, a mano izquierda encontrarán el Acuario de Londres y el London Eye.
Si desean entrar a alguna de estas atracciones les recomiendo que revisen el la página oficial. Allí pueden chequear promociones, tickets variados para diversas atracciones, buenos precios y además se ahorrarán la cola para comprar personalmente las entradas y evitarán perder tiempo. Si suben al London Eye amarán la vista que tienen desde allí, podrán ver cada sitio importante de Londres desde lo más alto.
Cuando terminen su paseo por la zona de Westminster sigan hacia South Bank, ubíquense así: pasan el Acuario, luego el London Eye y siguen caminando hacia donde vean el Puente de La Torre – Tower Bridge. Para mi esta es una de las zonas más divinas para caminar por Londres. South Bank es un encanto. En el camino se conseguirán con artistas, cantantes, restaurantes y pequeñas tiendas, sigan siempre derecho. Cualquiera de los sitios que están frente al río Támesis son ricos para comer.
En la vía pasarán al lado del teatro El Globo – Shakespeare´s Globe Theatre, allí se exponen obras teatrales durante el verano. También se encontrarán el Museo Nacional Británico de Arte Moderno, Tate Modern, y si es de su agrado, pueden dar una visita a cualquiera de estos.
La caminata desde el London Eye hasta el Tower Bridge es un poco larga, no se preocupen si sienten que están caminando muy lejos, les aseguro que hay bastante señalización que les ayudará a no sentirse perdidos. Aunque puede ser un poco extenso, no tengo duda de que esta es la forma más hermosa de conocer Londres.
Casi llegando a Tower Bridge se conseguirán con la parte moderna de Londres, grandes edificios con vidrios transparentes y hermosos restaurantes. El Pepinillo, segundo edificio más alto de la ciudad, es un emblema y un punto de referencia para los turistas.
Al llegar a Tower Bridge encontrarán unas pequeñas escaleras que les permitirán estar sobre él. Si tienen suerte y hay tráfico de barcos con gran altura podrían ver como se abre para darles paso. Al cruzar el puente bajen de nuevo las escaleras y tomen el otro lado de la vía como si estuviesen regresándose. Allí pasarán justo al lado de La Torre de Londres – Tower of London, donde se encuentran las joyas de la reina, pueden pasar y visitarlo si están interesados, solo que la entrada no es gratuita. Alrededor de la Torre de Londres se encuentran varios cafés y pueden disfrutar de una hermosa vista hacia el Tower Bridge. Desde allí mi siguiente parada es la Catedral de San Pablo – Saint Paul´s Cathedral, a donde pueden llegar en metro o bus. Normalmente yo tomo el bus y disfruto de la ciudad desde uno de sus grandes buses rojos. Tomen el bus número 15 y en unos minutos estarán en la Catedral. En los buses encontrarán una pequeña pantalla que les va anunciando las paradas, al ver Saint Paul´s Cathedral es allí donde deben bajarse.
Para entrar pueden comprar un ticket y subir aproximadamente 500 escalones para ver la ciudad desde arriba, si no les apetece entrar aprovechen para sentarse 5 minutos en sus escalones y disfrutar de la tranquilidad y antes de irse párense de frente a la Catedral y miren hacia arriba, les parecerá que se mueve hacia ustedes.
Regresen justo a la parada del bus donde se bajaron, allí pueden tomar de nuevo el bus 15 o el 23, cualquiera de estos los llevará hasta Piccadilly Circus. Allí termina el recorrido, es de noche y pueden disfrutar del Eros y las grandes luces de las pantallas que lo rodean. Si aún tienen fuerzas pueden pasar por un trago o algo de comer por O´Neill´s o alguno de los pubs cercanos.
Aunque parezca larga y algo agotadora esta ruta es hermosa y bastante completa, pueden hacerla en verano o invierno, la he probado y es igual de encantadora en cualquier momento. Por los meses de verano encontrarán mucha vida en los parques, «summer fairs» y los tradicionales pubs tendrán sus mesas al aire libre. Mientras en invierno tendrán luces por todos lados, chocolate caliente y una pista de hielo justo al lado de la Torre de Londres que abre por la temporada navideña, si están allí en ese momento es un «must do».
Les recuerdo que esta es una guía que pueden modificar a su tiempo, si están cortos de días les puede ayudar hacerla en un solo día. Si tienen bastante tiempo y quieren disfrutar con calma cada cosa pueden hacerla en dos o tres días. Todo dependerá de su ritmo, pueden quitar o agregar otras cosas que tengan en mente.

When we think of the English capital quickly we imagine the Big Ben, now known as The Elizabeth tower, the London Eye, the big red buses and the royalty. London is a charming city and no doubt it has thousands of things to discover. I lived there for quite a long period and I left written a big list with TO DO things unfinished. But when we want to sightsee we always seek to know the most important sites and sometimes is short the time that we have, so I decided to start my blog by sharing with you a quick and easy guide to visit London in a day.
First of all, I must say that the transport system in London is one of the best I know, moving around this big city can seem difficult but is just great. So, my first recommendation is to buy a Travelcard for a day of zones 1-2, where you can find the majority of tourist sites. Just make sure you know which area are you staying so that you can include it in the Travelcard. Here you can check prices, zones and take a look at the map of the Underground -subway- so you can start getting familiarized. I also share with you this little map where you can see where are the main attractions with underground / buses routes to get around easier. By the way, if you happen to arrive at Heathrow Airport, from there you can take the Piccadilly line which will take you to the city center in about 50 minutes. It is the cheapest way to make the journey.
After this little intro about how to move around London we start the real journey. I must confess that my brother in law taught me this little guide and every time I return to London I repeat it.
To begin, take the underground to Green Park (Picadilly and Victoria Line). There you will be just aside of the famous Ritz Hotel, the film Notting Hill, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, was recorded in spaces of the hotel, so you can take advantage and take your respective picture. I recommend you to be in Green Park at about 10 am, take your picture in The Ritz and cross the park towards Buckingham Palace.
Parks are a natural attraction of this big city, so get some time to enjoy them, walk slowly. Crossing the park will not take you more than 10 minutes, it all depends on your pace. When you reach the end of the park you will find Buckingham Palace, large black gates and a big crowd will help you not to get lost.
I recommend you to be around 10 am at Green Park because at 11:30 am takes place the Changing the Guard at the palace, one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. You shouldn’t miss it, try to be early and get a good spot.
Normally in the winter time there are some changes in the schedule of this event so if traveling in the cold months, visit here before starting the tour to check for possible reschedules and cancellations.
When the Changing of the Guard ends, take the big red road that is opposite the palace. You can walk down the street or inside St. James Park, beautiful park with big green spaces, lakes and even ducks to feed. Walk straight ahead to the Admiralty Arch and when you pass it you will find Trafalgar Square. You will know it because of the big lions and the big obelisk in the middle. There is also The National Art Gallery of London. If you like it you can take a look, the admission is totally free.
Then take the road to Whitehall Street towards Big Ben, do not be afraid, you won´t get lost. From the Gallery in Trafalgar look forward and see at the bottom the Big Ben and the London Eye, so go towards them, always straight. Along the way you will encounter the House Guards Parade, there you can take pictures with the guards and their beautiful horses.
Walk to the end of the street and you will find the area of Westminster, the Big Ben, the Parliament and the Palace of Westminster. There you will be marvel at the beautiful Clock Tower, finally you will be in front of one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. When you arrive at the Big Ben you will find the Westminster Bridge, and across the entire bridge, just at the end in your left, you will find the London Aquarium and the London Eye.
If you wish to enter to any of these attractions I recommend you to check the official page. Here you can review promotions, tickets for mixed attractions, good prices -normally they have good deals- and also you will skip the queues when buying tickets in person and avoid wasting time. If you get on the London Eye you will love the view you have, every major London site could be seem from there.
When you finish your walk in the Westminster area continue to South Bank. Place yourself this way: pass the Aquarium, the London Eye and then continue walking straight to where you see the Tower Bridge. For me, this is one of the most divine walking areas around London, South Bank is a charm. On the way you will find artists, singers, restaurants and small shops, go always straight . Any of the sites that are facing the river are nice to eat.
In the way you will pass alongside the Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, there are plays set during the summer. You will also find the Tate Modern -the British National Museum of Modern Art-. If you feel like, you can make a visit to any of these.
The walk from the London Eye to the Tower Bridge is a bit long, do not worry if you feel you are walking very far, I assure you that there is enough signage to help you not to feel lost. Although it may be a bit long, I have no doubt that this is the most beautiful way to see London.
Almost reaching Tower Bridge you will find the modern part of London, large buildings and beautiful restaurants with transparent glasses. The Gherkin, the second tallest building in the city, is an emblem and a reference point for tourist.
When you get to Tower Bridge you will find a small staircase that will allow you to be on the bridge, if you are lucky and there is boat traffic with high altitude, you would be able to see as it opens to let them pass. When you cross the bridge, go back down the stairs and take the other side of the road as if you were going back to the Big Ben. There you will be right beside The Tower of London, where the jewels of the queen are found. You can go and visit if you wish, the entry is not free.
Around the Tower of London are several coffee stores and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Tower Bridge. From there my next stop is Saint Paul ‘s Cathedral. To arrive there you can take the subway or bus. Normally I take the bus, so you can live the experience to go around London on the big red bus. Take the bus number 15 and within minutes you will be in the Cathedral. On the buses you will find a small screen that announces the stops, when you see Saint Paul ‘s Cathedral push the Stop button .
To enter the Cathedral you can buy a ticket and climb about 500 steps to see the city from above, if you do not feel like entering, take 5 minutes to sit in the Cathedral stairs and enjoy the tranquility of the area. Before you go, stand up in front of the Cathedral and look up, you will feel like if it was moving towards you.
When you finish there, go back to the bus stop where you arrived previously, there you will take the bus again. Take bus number 15 or 23, any of them will take you to Piccadilly Circus. There ends the tour, it’s night and you can enjoy The Eros and the big screens lights that surrounds it. If you still have forces you can go for a drink or something to eat at O’Neill’s or in one of the nearby pubs.
Although it seems long and a little tiring this route is beautiful and quite complete. You can do it in summer or winter, I have tried it and it is just lovely in any time. Around the hot months you will find a lot of life in the parks, summer fairs and traditional pubs with outdoor seating while in winter they have beautiful lights, hot chocolate and an ice rink right next to the Tower of London, which opens for the Christmas season, if you are there at that time it is a Must Do.
I remind you that this is a guide that you can change depending in your time. If you are short of days it can help you to do it in one day, if you have enough time and want to enjoy calmly everything, you can do it in two or three days. All depends of your time, you can remove or add other things that you have in mind.
I know there is much more to do in London, for that reason in a future post I will give you small tips and other places that you should visit in this wonderful city.
